Academic, as well as press, freedom is one of the key litmus tests of a free society. Academic freedom is forbidden in Totalitarian societies. Catholic Europe burned scientists like Giordano Bruno. Communist China instructs academics to use government approved textbooks and puts government spies in every lecture to ensure conformity to communist party edicts. The BBC in spying on a British Professor via nefarious calls to his students’ cell phones whose numbers can only have been obtained with the help of the intelligence services now performs the role of PRAVDA and the KGB in the former Soviet Union. I grew up when the USSR was in full thought suppression mode. When the Wall fell in 1989 I believed freedom of thought would spread East. Instead it seems Soviet style Communist thought control is spreading West.
