I remember when the narrative of Serbian genocide began to break down under the weight of the evidence investigators discovered that disproved the narrative. It was months before January, 2001 (when Bush 43 took office) during a White House press conference that Clinton's Press Secretary, Joe Lockhart, was asked about the disparity between claims of millions killed by Serbians, Milosevic responsible for the Hitlerian 'ethnic cleansing' and mass graves not seen in Europe since WWII and the reality being discovered on the ground, with the carnage found in any war zone (war=dead people) but not notably worse than any war zone (war=dead people).

Joe Lockhart adopted a confrontational stance towards the White House reporter, aggressively pounding the podium (Clinton-esqe like) and with extreme prejudice responded, "How many dead people would you be okay with?!?! 100,000? 10,000? 1,000? How many people need to die before the world stands up to murderous regimes?!?! We don't think ANY should be murdered by their government!!!" As close to the direct quote as I can recollect, if anyone is able to find the clip it will ring true.

And, Poof!!, just like that, the "ethnic cleansing" genocide justification for the NATO strikes was dismissed with the wave of a fist pounding a podium in the White House press briefing room by an indignant press secretary who declared any death, anywhere by any government the US government disapproves of is justification for US and NATO war interventions. When the narrative collapsed the tyrants turned to bellicose, contrived self-righteous indignation.

When there is no defense, go on offense. Much like an abuser in an abusive relationship, gas-lighting, blame-shifting, making the victim question their own sanity, believe they deserve it for questioning their abuser. Sames. Yes, I remember the narrative you describe falling apart well. And how narrators (liars) react with hostility when they get cornered in a narrative (lie).
